About St. Philothea Parish

St. Philothea Greek Orthodox Church, established in 1975, is located in Watkinsville, GA and serves the faithful in the city of Athens, GA.  The Reverend Anthony Salzman serves the parish of forty (40) families.

Fr. Petros Kopsahilis, the former Chancellor of the Diocese of Atlanta, chose the church name of St. Philothea because she is also the patron saint of Athens, Greece.  Now we are sister parishes, and in June of 2004 we had our Thyranoixia.  A gift of an icon of St. Philothea was brought to us by Rev. Archimandrite Timotheos from St. Philothea in Athens, Greece.

The parish of St. Philothea is most proud of their family atmosphere and team spirit.  Now a days it is a rule rather than the exception, that parishes struggle with conflict and often end up divided.  It is important that we struggle and express our opinions, but that is only half of the equation.  In Orthodoxy we have all the tools to get us to the next level, that is to love one another and forgive each other and grow from our challenges.  For a small community we ‘do’ several ministries within our church, as well as outreach to our local community through teaching liturgies, and charitable work through our Philoptochos, but our greatest gift is that we love one another.

St. Philothea is the only Orthodox Church in the Athens area and the parish welcomes all area Orthodox Christians for worship each week, including Russians, Bulgarians, Serbians, Romanians, Albanians, Georgians, Americans, Ethiopians, and of course, Greeks.  Nearly 30% of the parish is comprised of those who converted to Orthodoxy from other traditions.
